Ryan Leonard, attorney, former state prosecutor and former legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Don Nickles filed an ethics report today showing his campaign for the Republican nomination for Attorney General has raised $154,735.98 including more than $122,000.00 in the second quarter.

Leonard’s contributors read like a who’s who of Oklahoma leaders and politicos – former Governor Frank Keating, former Tulsa Mayor James Hewgley, Jr., Major General Retired Lee Baxter, State Senator James Halligan, Pre-Paid Legal Founder Harland Stonecipher, former Congressman Bill Brewster, former Attorney General G.T. Blankenship, Ike Glass, Renzi Stone, former Republican National Committeeman Lynn Windel, and former Oklahoma City Mayor Andy Coats.  In addition Leonard’s contribution report shows support from numerous small business owners, farmers and ranchers from around the state.

“I am pleased our campaign is receiving such a tremendous amount of broad-based, statewide support at this very early stage in the campaign,” Leonard said.  “Our campaign is about the future of Oklahoma, and we are just getting started.”

Leonard, who is the only Republican candidate to announce his intention to seek the Attorney General’s post, plans to formally kick-off his campaign this fall.  Leonard’s filing only reflects amounts raised through June 30, 2009. Leonard, who resides in Oklahoma City with his wife and three children, is originally from Beaver in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School – Part 2

Jul 31 2009 Published by admin under Education

With Back to School sales begining soon and preparations for the new school year underway, okiepundit.com shares Part 2 of the rules from Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can’t Read, Write, Or Add.

Rule No. 8:   Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life has not! In some schools, they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. Failing grades have been abolished and class valedictorians scrapped, lest anyone’s feelings be hurt. Effort is as important as results. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. (See Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2 and Rule No. 4.)

Rule No. 9:   Life is not divided into semesters, and you don’t get summers off. Not even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don’t get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. While we’re at it, very few jobs are interested in fostering your self-expression or helping you find yourself. Fewer still lead to self-realization. (See Rule No. 1 and Rule No. 2.)

Rule No. 10:   Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs. Your friends will not be as perky or pliable as most TV characters.

Rule No. 11:   Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.

Rule No. 12:   Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you’re out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That’s what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for “expressing yourself” with purple hair, tattoos and/or pierced body parts.

Rule No. 13:   You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven’t seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.
Rule No. 14:   Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school’s a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you’ll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You’re welcome.

Is Fair Tax really just a front for candidates?

Jul 31 2009 Published by admin under Budget and taxes

fairtax
Okiepundit.com has received several reports about local Fair Tax representatives using “informational” meetings to bash Republican incumbents Tom Cole and Mary Fallin. The Oklahoma Fair Tax organization is the local chapter of a nation-wide advocacy group whose disclaimer states they are “not associated with nor endorse any political candidate or party.”

According to reports received by okiepundit.com, Fair Tax representatives have spoken out against Congressman Tom Cole, who has not signed on as a Co-Sponsor of the FairTax bill. Fair Tax representatives have urged attendees to support RJ Harris, a Republican challenger to Tom Cole and State Senator Randy Brogdon, who is vying with Mary Fallin for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2010.

The Fair Tax maybe a great way to reform our nation’s tax code, but the organization would be well served to keep a tighter leash on its representatives who are violating its own disclaimer against endorsing particular candidates.

Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School – Part 1

Jul 30 2009 Published by admin under Education

With Back to School sales begining soon and preparations for the new school year underway, okiepundit.com shares these rules from Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can’t Read, Write, Or Add.  Stay tunned for Part 2
Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase “It’s not fair” 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1.
Rule No. 2: The real world won’t care as much about your self-esteem as much as your school does. It’ll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it’s not fair. (See Rule No. 1)
Rule No. 3: Sorry, you won’t make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won’t be a vice president or likely be able to afford a phone both (this is not a “right” and you can function without it). You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn’t have a label you have ever heard of.
Rule No. 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait ’til you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he’s not going to ask you how you feel about it.
Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren’t embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about music or playing video games all weekend.
Rule No. 6: It’s not your parents’ fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of “It’s my life,” and “You’re not the boss of me,” and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it’s on your dime. Don’t whine about it, or you’ll sound like a baby boomer.
Rule No. 7: Before you were born your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your bedroom.

Blog Urges Oklahomans to Draft Pruitt for AG

Jul 29 2009 Published by admin under Judiciary and Law, Oklahoma Politics

Charlie Polston, a Tulsa inventor and businessman has created a blog urging Oklahomans to draft Scott Pruitt to run for Attorney General.  The blog, http://www.pruitt4okag.blogspot.com/, states that Polston has known Pruitt, a former State Senator from Broken Arrow, for over a decade and and that Pruitt “is a true man of integrity, character and honor . . . [and] has the conservative values that are shared by me and most Oklahomans.”

Scott Pruitt is a licensed attorney who has specialized in Constitutional Law before running for State Senate in 1998. Elected in 1998, Pruitt served in the Senate until 2006 where he was a member of the Republican Leadership.  As a Senator, Pruitt was a staunch advocate for lawsuit and workers compensation reform.

Should he decide to enter the race, he will join Republican Ryan Leonard, an Oklahoma City attorney who has already announced his candidacy for Attorney General.

Rob Johnson Announces Bid for State Senate

Jul 28 2009 Published by admin under Oklahoma Politics, State Legislature

robjohnson21
Former State Representative Rob Johnson announced today that he is running for the open State Senate District 22 seat that encompasses portions of Canadian, Kingfisher, Logan and Oklahoma Counties.

“We need more conservative leaders in the Senate who will oppose wasteful spending, support lower taxes, and defend the traditional moral values that Oklahomans believe in,” said Johnson, whose father Mike currently holds the seat but is term limited.

“When I see the liberals in Washington raising taxes to historic levels and spending us deeper into debt, I worry about the future of our country,” said Johnson. “The states that have modeled their policies after the Democrats in Washington, like California and New York, are literally on the verge of bankruptcy. I’m running for the State Senate to keep Oklahoma from going down that path.”

Johnson has experience in policymaking at the state level. He served four years in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he was known for his conservative stances on taxes, spending and moral issues and was a member of House Leadership.

“In the House of Representatives, I opposed wasteful spending and helped pass the two largest tax cuts in Oklahoma history,” said Johnson. “I also authored lawsuit reform and other measures to help our small businesses grow and add jobs. The private sector, not government, is the economic engine of America.”

Johnson said his main priority as a Senator will be to ensure a bright future for Oklahoma families and businesses.

“Oklahoma is a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family,” said Johnson. “If the politicians in Oklahoma City will focus on creating a smaller, less burdensome government that respects conservative moral values, Oklahoma has a bright future.”

Rob Johnson lives in Kingfisher with his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Kensington and McKellyn. Rob and Michelle have been married twelve years.

Illegal Aliens Deported from State Prison

Jul 23 2009 Published by admin under Judiciary and Law

ice

Nearly two dozen illegal aliens in state prison were turned over to federal authorities for deportation today, continuing a process that could ultimately save taxpayers close to $7 million.

“For too long, Oklahoma’s working families have paid the price for the federal government’s failure to control our nation’s borders,” said state Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore. “Now, thanks to the Criminal Illegal Alien Rapid Repatriation Act of 2009, the federal government will have to bear the financial burden created by these criminals who never should have been here in the first place.”

A group of 22 inmates, all illegal aliens convicted of crimes in Oklahoma, were transferred today from the John Lilley Correctional Center near Boley. Federal officials with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement accepted custody of the group this morning.

House Bill 2245, by Terrill, created the Criminal Illegal Alien Rapid Repatriation Act and allowed the Department of Corrections to send illegal alien inmates to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

“We are pleased to see the operational aspects developed for Representative Terrill’s bill to take effect,” said Justin Jones, director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. “This is a measure that saves public funds without compromising public safety.”

Prison officials report that 346 of the 541 illegal aliens currently in state prison will ultimately be eligible for deportation under the program, with 181 immediately eligible for deportation.

Since the law gained final legislative approval in May, 32 illegal alien inmates have already been turned over to federal authorities. Today’s group, however, was the largest single transfer to date.

The state pays about $20,000 per year to house each inmate, meaning the ultimate savings generated by the repatriation program will total about $6.9 million.  “During tough economic times when our prisons have to do more with less, this program allows us to maximize our limited tax dollars,” Terrill said. “This program is being considered for duplication across the country and I am proud that Oklahoma was one of the first to enact this common-sense measure.”

Obama, Bush and 60 Feet

Jul 15 2009 Published by admin under Culture

Last night President Barack Obama became the first President to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at an All-Star game since President Gerald Ford in 1976.  But for the millions of fans tuning in on television, all they saw was President Obama’s wind up and release.  None of the dozen or so Fox cameras actually followed his pitch to home plate! Instead they used a “tight” angle shot.

Conspiracy?

Another example of how the media is totally in the tank for Obama?

Between 200 and 300 pitches were thrown during last night’s All Star game – and nearly all of them were shown on the live broadcast by Fox.  But the most important pitch, the ceremonial one thrown by the leader of the free world, was somehow cut off?  In all fairness, Fox later on did show a replay that revealed Obama’s pitch didn’t quite get al the way to home and was spared an embarrassing bounce by the deft catching of Albert Puljos.  Obama may be a bigger spender than his predecessor, but last night he showed that he can’t throw nearly as well as George W.

See Obama’s toss last night and Bush’s toss in the 2001 World Series.

Is This Really News Worthy?

Jul 09 2009 Published by admin under Culture

yellowjournalism

You can sure tell its July and that local news outlets are really scrambling for news stories.  Why else would 32 year old Chad Istook’s arrest make the headlines of all the local TV stations and newspapers?  And not just any headline, but headlines like, “Ernest Istook’s son hides from bounty hunters” or “Istook’s Son Arrested By Bounty Hunters”.

Granted okiepundit.com is fond of Congressman Istook and his family and therefore a little biased (see our motto).  But is this really newsworthy?  Chad is an adult.  He has clearly made some poor choices.  For that we should be praying for him that he may turn his life around.  But the press seems to be focused on anyone who sins that is a relative of a politician – past or present.

The reality is that were Chad not the son of Ernest Istook this would not be a story.  Whether its Bristol Palin, the Bush twins, or Chelsea Clinton (oops we forgot, she was and is off limits to the mainstream press), the press’ obsession with the peccadillos of politician’s family members is a sad statement about the poor quality of journalism  today.  It’s also another example of why so many otherwise qualified people choose not to run for public office.  Why run and subject your entire family to such public scrutiny?

Okipeundit.com has no problem with holding public officials accountable in the press.  But let’s stop with the sensational stories about their family members.

Romney Leads Among GOP Voters With Fiscal Concerns

Jul 08 2009 Published by admin under Budget and taxes, Presidential politics

mitt

Rasmussen Reports that Mitt Romney is the early leader among Republican Voters.  From the Rasmussen Report published  Wednesday, July 08, 2009:
Those who say economic and fiscal issues are their biggest concerns make up the majority of Republican voters, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney runs best among those voters if the 2012 GOP Presidential Primary in their state was held today.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is the top choice for those Republicans who put national security first and ties Romney for first among voters who list economic issues alone as the priority. She runs second in nearly every other case with voters from all camps.

Palin, who stunned the political world by announcing her intention to step down as governor by the end of this month, is second only to Romney among all GOP voters as the candidate they’d vote for if the primaries were held today. But she’s also one of two candidates Republican voters least hope ultimately wins the party’s nomination.

Right now, would-be primary voters, choosing among six prominent Republicans, go 25% for Romney, 24% for Palin and 22% for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. But it’s important to remember that the first primary is over 18 months away.

Thirty-three percent (33%) of GOP voters list economic issues such as jobs and economic growth as most important, followed by 27% who rate fiscal issues such as taxes and government spending that way. For 15%, national security issues are the priority, while 10% list domestic issues such as Social Security and health care as most important. Five percent (5%) say cultural issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion are number one.

Among those Republicans who put economic issues first, Romney and Palin are tied with 24% support if the state primaries were held today. Huckabee is backed by 20%, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 15% of their vote.

But Romney at 34% is far and away the favorite among those who say fiscal issues are most important, followed by Palin (24%), Huckabee (17%) and Gingrich (14%).

Palin is first with 29% support among voters for whom national security is most important. Romney runs a close second at 26%, with Huckabee at 19% and Gingrich at 16%.

Forty percent (40%) of Republican voters believe Palin has hurt her chances of winning the nomination in 2012 by resigning as governor of Alaska. Twenty-four percent (24%) say the resignation helps her chances, and 28% say it will have no impact on the race.

Thank You George W. Bush

Jul 04 2009 Published by admin under Presidential politics

225px-george-w-bush

Today, our 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, visits Woodward Oklahoma.  In honor of President Bush’s visit to our state on this Independence Day, okiepundit salutes our past Commander in Chief and on behalf of fellow conservatives, thanks Bush for a job well done.  Okiepundit points to two major accomplishments of President Bush that Oklahomans and all Americans should be thankful for.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, President Bush launched a global War on Terrorism that toppled regimes sympathetic to terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq, and prevented another terrorist attack on American soil.

And perhaps Bush’s longest lasting legacy are his appointments of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court.  Both of these appointments strengthen the Court’s conservative tilt and should keep the Court from overreaching its Constitutionally designated power to interpret, not expand government’s role under the Constitution.

While much of America may not be very sympathetic to Bush 43, okiepundit and Oklahomans still love you and thank you for your service to our nation.

This July 4th, Remember the Founders

Jul 02 2009 Published by admin under Good government

Commentary by Brion McClanahan, author of the Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers. founding-fathers

While Americans are busy enjoying ice cream, hot dogs, cold drinks, and fireworks on July 4, I’m sure very few consider the following questions: What would the Founding Fathers say about the modern United States, and what is the meaning of independence? Certainly the United States would not be here without the Founders, the greatest generation in American history, but perhaps a better way of answering the questions is by simply considering whether the United States is the federal republic of the Founders’ design or has it been “remade” as Barack Obama continues to suggest.

The dichotomy between the Founders’ republic and the federal leviathan in Washington D.C. could not be more pronounced than it is in 2009. The Founding Fathers would all be considered conservatives today, even the most ardent centralizers in the bunch. They recognized the need for government, but with few exceptions believed in local and state sovereignty and as little government as possible. They would not have accepted the rash of federal bailouts—or in many cases central banking in general (the FED)—or modern welfare capitalism and the public debt that accompanies hundreds of “social” programs designed to redistribute wealth. They seceded from the British government in part because of unconstitutional (and miniscule by modern standards) taxes and would be appalled by the current level of taxation in America on all levels of government. They were a God-fearing generation jealous of individual liberty and believed through their understanding of history that without constitutional restraint government could be the most dangerous enemy of liberty and freedom. They would have been wary of the unconstitutional powers of the modern executive branch and would have been suspicious of a man who promised “Hope and Change.” As Benjamin Franklin said, “He who lives on hope will die fasting.”

The Founding Fathers also understood that a sound republic depended on an educated, virtuous, civic minded citizenry, and their government and society reflected their values. Patrick Henry often reminded his fellow Virginians that the “ancient constitutions” of their forefathers provided the best example for the future. He was guided, as he articulated during his famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” speech, by the lamp of “experience.” John Dickinson, an important but forgotten founder, considered “Experience to be our only guide. Reason may mislead us.” These men broke from the British Empire in order to preserve the traditions of their communities, not create something new. They participated in government because it was their duty to serve, and they often resisted. Both George Washington and George Mason, for example, preferred retirement to politics, but humbly served when called and gave up power willingly. And, since this generation tended to be suspicious of government, government did very little. Forgotten founder George Clinton, arguably the most popular governor in New York history and no relation to Bill or Hillary, often celebrated that New York freeholders paid no taxes for eighteen years while he was in office. The founding generation disagreed on many things, but the right of self-determination and limited self-government was not one of them. Most viewed their state as their country and believed people had the right and duty to determine their own destiny, government included.

Moreover, the Founders were not egalitarian romantics with lofty views of human nature. They were men of their times, but the leaders of this generation had a sound understanding of classical history and the nature of man, without question better than the current crop of “educated” Americans. When current college freshmen have a difficult time recalling basic historical concepts or events, thanks in large part to public “education,” one has to wonder if current or future leaders could match the intellectual might of any of the Founding Fathers. Could contemporary Americans honestly rely upon federal or state “leaders” to write a viableconstitution or make decisions without conducting a public opinion poll? When image is more important than substance, probably not. In contrast, the founding generation produced the framework for two federal unions—the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution—and authored a host of state constitutions. History and the nature of man, of course, have not changed since the founding generation, only its interpretation and the willingness of modern Americans to seemingly embrace government involvement in our lives.

So, how does this apply to our society? If the United States had been “remade,” and it has, so too have American citizens. Americans have become less independent since the time of the founding generation. We owe thousands to large corporate banks, live in rented or mortgaged homes, and spend 110% of our income each year. We spend hours watching sports on television, ignore our history and civics, shun the vote, and trounce our Constitution. We have given our rights away often without protest to various levels of government and pay half of our money to these same governments in order to “level” society. We have forgotten the republican (not the same as the Republican Party) ideals of simplicity, frugality, civic participation, and virtue, and have failed to retain simple methods of survival, believing that the trough will always be full, our bellies always fat and our wallet stuffed with money (or credit). We have, in essence, become decadent serfs to Uncle Sam and in the process have been lulled by “bread and games.” A people with reckless habits can expect no more from their government and government often reflects society.

The ability of Americans to understand and emulate the founding generation holds the key to a prosperous future. Battle lines have been drawn. If Americans continue to accept larger and more powerful government, bailouts, government handouts, nationalized industries and restrictions on individual liberty, they move closer to dependence and serfdom and farther from the founding principles of the United States. But, the Founding Fathers would argue that every step Americans take toward decentralization, individual responsibility, and personal independence is a step toward salvaging the republic. July 4 is about independence from a king, freedom from oppressive government and high taxes, and the power of self-determination. All Americans would do well to remember that lesson. We can “remake” America or preserve the founding principles of the United States, but we cannot do both.

‘Go after ACORN,’ judge says

Jul 01 2009 Published by admin under Good government

acorn2
The Pittsburg Tribune Review reports that Pennsylvania Senior District Judge Richard H. Zoller, who held another ACORN worker for trial Monday on election law violations urged prosecutors to go after ACORN, the organization that employed him.

“Somebody has to go after ACORN,” Judge Zoller said about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

“It’s happening all over the country. All you have to do is turn on the television,” he said, referring to voter registration fraud charges brought recently against ACORN and its workers in Nevada.

“We will,” Allegheny County Detective Robert F. Keenan promised as he wrapped up his testimony.
